Wike Finally Addresses Rivers’ Political Crisis
Regarding the current political crisis in Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stated that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is actively working to settle the issue within.
Reports state that Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, has been charged with taking part in a plot to remove Siminalayi Fubara from office. Given that Wike had a hand in Fubara’s selection prior to their split, it is thought that a large number of state legislators have a strong sense of loyalty.
In Port Harcourt, the impeachment plot resulted in a bombing at the Rivers House of Assembly Complex and the use of water cannons and tear gas by the police against Governor Fubara.
President Tinubu handled the problem during the National Police Council meeting in light of these developments. Based on Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, the president’s participation shows that he is committed to bringing about peace in Rivers State.
In a video that Channels TV released, Wike stressed that the Rivers dispute is an internal party problem rather than one based on ethnicity.
He gave the assurance that the PDP is actively working toward a resolution to a group of South-South leaders who came to see him in Abuja to show support and congratulate him on being appointed as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Furthermore, he accepted that each politician is acting in their own self-interest.
This is noteworthy because it is his first public statement about the Rivers situation. Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku of the Niger Delta Development Commission was among the delegation members.
