Vandals destroy TCN transmission line, bringing darkness to Abuja.

The Shiroro-Katampe 330kV transmission line is one of the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN) vital infrastructures. The TCN reports that one of the vandals’ stolen components was stolen during the incident, which is the fifth instance of its kind in February and March of this year.
According to the firm, the Shiroro-Katampe transmission line encountered a trip at around nine in the morning on Sunday. TCN engineers tried, but were unable, to restore operation after conducting preliminary investigations.
Following efforts to locate the transmission line failure, linesmen were sent to physically patrol the suspected area, according to a statement released on Sunday night by TCN general manager of public affairs Ndidi Mbah.
Vigilant team leaders in the area alerted TCN linesmen about vandalism along the Shiroro-Katampe transmission line during the fault tracing procedure. TCN employees attested to the theft of conductors and vandalism of the 330kV Shiroro-Katampe transmission line 1, which runs from Towers 244 to 245,” the statement read.
Mbah further mentioned that, subject to the conclusion of the site’s security activities, TCN is now mobilizing for conductor replacement.
“However, together with the Gwagwalada 330kV line servicing the Kukwaba-Apo axis, the second line is still fully operational.”
Additionally, the 330kV transmission line between Lokoja and Gwagwalada would increase TCN’s wheeling capability towards Abuja and its surroundings. TCN is making great efforts to lessen the negative impact of these sabotage activities on the bulk power supply to Abuja and the surrounding areas.
The damage of Tower 70 along the Gwagwalade-Katampe transmission line on February 26, 2024, is one of the vandalism episodes that TCN reported in February 2024, and this incident adds to that string of events. Additional incidents on the Gombe-Damaturu 330kV transmission line include the vandalism of towers 377 and 378 on February 23, 2024, and the attack on towers 145 to 149 and 201 to 218 along the Owerri-Ahoda 132kV transmission line on February 15, 2024. Furthermore, on February 1, 2024, vandalism caused Tower number 388 on the Jos-Bauchi 132kV single circuit transmission line to collapse.
The host communities and appropriate security authorities are urged by TCN to work together to capture the individuals responsible for these acts of sabotage, since they are totally unacceptable. Preserving the country’s transmission infrastructure is crucial, and joint endeavors are needed to stop these occurrences.
“TCN requests the assistance of all Nigerians in reporting such vandalism. The nation’s electricity grid is a valuable resource, and protecting it is our shared duty, she emphasized.
However, a different statement endorsed by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) Management claims that the development has resulted in serious 33kV feeder outages.
The feeders along with the areas that they affected, which included: Suleja TS (Jiwa, Suleja, Industrial, Jere Field Base and others); Central TS (FDRS1–8); Katampe 1 (Lifecamp, Gwarimpa, Jabi, Wuse 2 and 9mobile feeders); Katampe 2 (Maitama, Jahi and Mape feeders); Kubwa TS (Kubwa, Deidei, NIPP, Bwari Dawaki and Dam feeders); GIS (D1 and D2 feeders to Gwarimpa); and Feeders on TR3 feeding at Apo TS feeding from 2X150MVA, 330KV Katampe TS (H1, H2, H3, H21 and H23 affecting the entire Garki, Garki 2, Aso Drive, International Airport, Lugbe).
