According to a spokeswoman on Wednesday, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu reorganized his 45-member cabinet, appointing seven new ministers, dismissing five, and moving ten others to different ministries.

The Ministry of Niger Delta Development will now be called the Ministry of Regional Development, the Ministry of Sports will be shut down, and the ministries of Tourism and arts and Culture will merge as part of the reorganization.
After taking office last year, Tinubu’s rapid reform effort raised hopes that his administration would be able to reverse the growing economic problems that Africa’s largest energy exporter was facing
However, 16 months later, the main tenets of his economic reform—devaluing the naira and cutting back on subsidies for electricity and gasoline—have caused inflation to surge to 32.70%, leading to a crisis in the cost of living.
According to presidential spokeswoman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu named junior ministers for foreign affairs, education, and housing in the reshuffle, along with new ministers for labor, livestock development, commerce and investment, humanitarian relief, and poverty alleviation.

Despite requests from critics to reduce government bureaucracy and cut expenditures, Tinubu’s cabinet is still larger than that of his predecessor Muhammadu Buhari, who had 43 ministers during his second term in office. The president is required by law to appoint one representative from each of the 36 states in the union.
Despite having two junior ministers in place, Tinubu has not yet named his primary petroleum minister.
