Tinubu orders complete adherence to the Export Prohibition Act due to the food crisis.
According to Mr. Bashir Adeniyi Adewale, Comptroller General (CG) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), President Bola Tinubu has ordered complete adherence to the Export Prohibition Act in order to facilitate the availability of food items and checkmates that have been smuggled out of the nation.
The NCS head asserted on Friday, “The export prohibition act, were not implemented in the country, because Nigeria had food sufficiency in the past,” in a conversation with the leaders and members of the Dawanu market association Kano.
He did, however, reveal that the country was experiencing a food crisis at the time, so the President ordered that the Export Prohibition Act be fully implemented to make sure that goods were not exported at a time when the public desperately needed them.
The statement goes on, “We want to promote domestic food production in the nation. Certain products are prohibited from being exported anywhere in the world, including the United States of America.
Subsequently, those nations established all essential systems to guarantee that they controlled both the inflow and outflow of goods.
“Every responsible organisation and country has taken that law very important.
“In Nigeria, you may be aware of export prohibition act, is law that forbidden taken some food items out of the country adding that law had been for sometimes but were not been implemented”.
According to what he revealed, the Export Prohibition Act had not been put into effect in the past because the nation had enough food. However, because the nation is currently experiencing a food crisis, the directive is required in order to address the issue of hunger in the nation.
A law prohibiting the export of specific grain products—among them, rice, beans, sorghum, and maize—was put into effect during this current period.
Subsequently, Mr. Adewale tasked the participants in the Dawanu grain market with aiding the government in meeting the mandate prohibiting the export of food items, in order to supply the masses with an adequate supply of food.
“It is unwise for a reasonable and sincere country to embark on the exportation of food items, why her citizens were in need of them.
“You are a big stakeholder in this direction, these are reasons am here to interact with you and solicit for your support.”
He went on to say that the Customs would prefer not to raid markets instead of educating the relevant parties about the importance of their respective contributions to addressing the nation’s food shortage.
Alhaji Muttaka Isa, the market chairman of Dawanu, had earlier claimed that the vendors there were not stockpiling food.
“This market is the largest grain market, we not only sell in bulk to the country but as well to other neighbouring countries, like Chad, Niger, and other foreign countries.
“We also assisted in keeping and supply food items to Internally Displace Persons IDP) promised the readiness of the association to complement effort of the government in tackling inadequate food items,” he said.
