Reports of bank robbery in Port Harcourt false — Police

The Rivers State Police Command has described as “false and misleading” online posts claiming that armed robbers attacked a popular bank branch in Port Harcourt on 23 September 2025, urging the public to disregard the reports.
Port Harcourt, the state capital, has at times been the scene of criminal incidents related to cultism, organised crime and isolated bank robberies, just as many Nigerian cities have experienced violent crimes.
The speed of information sharing on social media, however, has increased the risk of unverified rumours spreading and causing panic.
In an official statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe‑Koko, said no such bank robbery was recorded and warned that the spread of false reports endangers public order and hampers genuine police operations. The command reiterated the importance of relying on official channels for security updates.
SP Grace Iringe‑Koko said, “Members of the public should disregard the fabricated reports. The command is on alert, but there was no bank robbery in Port Harcourt as being peddled online.”
A local bank manager, who asked not to be named, said the branch operated normally and that staff were surprised to learn of the viral posts.
False reports of violent incidents can erode public confidence and trigger harmful behaviours such as panic withdrawals, school closures or unnecessary mobilisations.
The Rivers State Police Command said it will monitor social media for the spread of the false reports and will investigate the source of the fabrications.
Citizens are urged to report suspicious posts and to rely on verified police and government communication channels.
