According to government sources who spoke to Newsmen on Thursday, the President dissolved the Ministry of the Niger Delta because the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) already existed.
President Bola Tinubu reportedly abolished the Ministry of the Niger Delta.
The sources stated that all tasks and obligations formerly assigned to the Ministry of the Niger Delta will be transferred to the NDDC after the ministry is abolished.
The Ministry of the Niger Delta has been abolished by Tinubu. Since the Niger Delta Development Commission already exists, it appears that they are duplicating their efforts. Now, all tasks carried out by the Ministry of the Niger Delta would be transferred to the NDDC, according to one of the sources.
The President also created some new ministries while the names of some existing ministries have been modified including the Ministry of Environment And Ecological Management, Ministry of Marine And Blue Economy, Ministry of Health And Social Welfare, the Ministry of Gas Resources, and Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
Additionally, there is the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and the Digital Economy, which was formerly known as the Ministry of Communications and the Digital Economy.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development is now the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and will be headed by Betta Edu.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development had been split into two —Ministry of Youth and Ministry of Sports Development.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu appealed to President Tinubu to remove the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in May. He described the works of the ministry as a duplication of the Niger Delta Development Commission.
Some parastatals and ministries that are no longer functional, such as the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and other non-functional ministries, ought to be abolished.
The North East Development Commission exists as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission. Therefore, he said that the Ministry of the Niger Delta be dissolved.
