Pap: Ijaw youth council (IYC) call for upward review of the Presidential amnesty program allocation
The Federal Government has been implored by Ijaw youth, acting through the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), to provide additional funding for the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) so that it can function at its best and ensure a lasting peace in the Niger Delta.
Speaking to reporters immediately after leading a council team on a courtesy call to PAP Administrator Dr. Dennis Otuaro in Abuja, IYC President Jonathan Lokpobiri made the remark.
In a statement sent to reporters on Wednesday and signed by IYC spokesperson Princewill Binebai, Lokpobiri said the PAP’s reach was growing and that it could no longer be operated on its current budget, which had not changed in many years.
The Ijaw youth umbrella body pointed out that much work needed to be done by the program to guarantee the region’s continued stability
In addition, the group contended that the current state of Nigeria’s economy and novel problems in the area have strengthened the case for further funding for the program.
According to the council, it found after carefully examining the program that the dollar was worth N120 at the beginning of the PAP. It also stated that there were enough ample explanations for the government to think about bolstering the program with more funding.
President Bola Tinubu, the Ministers of Finance and Budget, and the National Assembly leadership were requested by the Ijaw youths to recognize the necessity of increasing program funding..
“As Ijaw Youth Council, we have carefully evaluated the Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP) and the enormous accomplishments that the program has made over the years,” the statement said in part.
Our analysis, however, revealed that the program can no longer perform efficiently with its present budget because, at the time of its conception, the dollar was worth N120.
Even now, the same program is being operated with the same N65 billion budgeted allocation for a full year. Right now, the dollar is about N1,700, and the program’s budget hasn’t changed despite its growing needs.
As council, we would want to recommend to President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, the Senate President, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Budget, and the National Assembly leadership to cooperate in order to increase the program’s budget.
Nigeria will pay more if the Niger Delta fails, thus there are a lot of expectations for this venture. Maintaining peace in the Niger Delta is mostly the responsibility of the PAP. Therefore, it is imperative that this program be expanded to accommodate more people at this time.
For reorienting the PAP and “bringing the program back to our people in the Niger Delta,” Lokpobiri venerated Otuaro.
Lokpobiri congratulated the PAP chief for connecting with youth body and reassured him of the IYC’s support, emphasizing that the administrator’s leadership position and his inclusionary policy had created stability in the area.
