OBANSANJO: “Leave the past behind and strive for Nigeria’s progress.”

On Tuesday, Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, urged Nigerians to strive for their nation’s glory.

He made the call while hosting members of the League of Northern Democrats, led by Ibrahim Shekarau, a former Kano State governor, at his presidential library in Abeokuta.

“We must put the past behind us and work for the greatness of Nigeria,” he said. We have disappointed ourselves, the black race, Africa, and the world at large. So, our concern is right. We have rubbished the value of integrity, no truth, no love, but it is not too late to retrace our steps.”

According to Obasanjo, regionalism was the true cause of the country’s political and economic problems.

According to him, the nation has been too long divided, which has hindered its socioeconomic and political advancement.

Despite the difficulties Nigeria is presently facing, the former president expressed hope that if the people understood the importance of having the appropriate leadership to give the country the boost it needs for socioeconomic and political growth, Nigeria could become a better nation.

Yes, you have named your organization the League of Northern Democrats, but I would rather that you call it the National League of Democrats since your origins shouldn’t be an issue. My Nigerian identity shouldn’t be undermined by my place of birth. Instead of belonging to the Republic of Oodua, I shall be growing as a Nigerian.

“Being a Nigerian shouldn’t be an obstacle to my Yoruba identity, even though I am pleased to be one. No matter where he comes from, we have to hire the best individual for the position. We need to straighten up.

“We are admired by the Black race, the African continent, and the entire world. “Is that the case now?” he asked. “What they were calling us was giant in the sun when we gained our independence.
