Nigeria is deporting foreigners who have been found guilty of online fraud.

In a significant crackdown on cross-border cybercrime, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has started deporting 192 foreign nationals who were found guilty of participating in online fraud.
According to information obtained, the first group of 42 prisoners was deported on Sunday, and on Monday and Tuesday, further groups are expected to be evacuated to their home nations.
A court judgment requiring their expulsion after serving jail sentences in Nigeria prompted the mass return.
In December 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested hundreds of foreign nationals, including the deportees, in what the agency called the “largest single-day” operation against Nigerian internet fraudsters.
792 members of a criminal gang were apprehended after EFCC agents stormed a seven-story building on Victoria Island in Lagos.
The foreigners allegedly turned the building into a training center where Nigerians were taught how to carry out romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud, and other internet-based investment schemes, according to the anti-graft agency.
According to the EFCC, “among those arrested were 114 Chinese nationals, 40 Filipinos, two citizens of Kazakhstan, one Pakistani, and one Indonesian.”
Additionally, it stated that in July, a final forfeiture of $222,729 in digital assets linked to a few Chinese prisoners was achieved.
They were then arraigned on a number of charges pertaining to cybercrime and associated offenses at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Some of the foreign nationals were found guilty by June 2025, and the court ordered the Comptroller-General of Immigration to make sure they were deported within seven days after serving their jail terms.
The EFCC had reaffirmed its determination to take down international fraud networks.
