A group from the Northeast that goes by the name Bring Back Our Goodluck has expressed regret to former President Goodluck Jonathan for his involvement in funding terrorism in the area. They claim that they were duped by a previous US president and some desperate Nigerian politicians.
Grema Kyari, the group’s national president, called the accusations “lies” and maintained that they were a part of a larger plot to depose Jonathan in 2015. Kyari made these claims during a news conference in Maiduguri on Friday.
The group now acknowledges the accusations as untrue and politically driven, according to Kyari, who said that he was one of the people who initially believed the claims.
“I come before you not only as the National Chairman of Bring Back Our Goodluck but as a witness to history and as a Nigerian who, like millions of others, was once misled. I am from Borno State, one of the epicentres of the Boko Haram insurgency. During the presidency of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a damaging narrative was that he sponsored Boko Haram and used the military to suppress us. These lies thrived in an environment of limited and restricted access to truth,” he said.
With increased visibility and a better knowledge, the group said they now realize the accusations were unfounded and offered the former president a “heartfelt public apology.”
“We now recognise that he was a leader of integrity, compassion, and national vision. We now believe that President Jonathan was removed from office in 2015 as a result of regime change orchestrated by foreign powers in connivance with some desperate politicians in Nigeria,” Kyari added.
The organization praised Jonathan as a democrat who prioritized the country, emphasizing his legacy.
“In 2015, President Jonathan made history by conceding defeat even before the final election results were declared. He called then-General Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him, a courageous and selfless act that prevented post-election violence and safeguarded our democracy,” Kyari said.
Recalling how the former president signed the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act into law in January 2014 in defiance of international criticism, he also cited Jonathan’s defense of Nigeria’s traditional values. In contrast to the recently signed Samoa Agreement, which he said undercuts the nation’s moral principles, he said the action protected them.
In contrast to the present government’s sudden removal of fuel subsidies, which has caused widespread hardship, Kyari further contended that Jonathan’s administration demonstrated humility by partially reversing the 2012 removal in response to nationwide demonstrations.
He went on to say that Jonathan’s nominations were made on the basis of ability and merit rather than political or tribal favoritism.
“He aimed to bring people together instead of dividing them, which is something Nigeria sorely needs right now,” Kyari emphasized.
The organization pushed Jonathan to run for president in 2027 and called for his return to politics.
“From the East to the West, from the North to the South, I urge all well-meaning Nigerians to stand with me in calling on Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR, to once again answer the call of history on behalf of Bring Back Our Goodluck. And he deserves another opportunity to govern in this economic catastrophe,” Kyari said.
