INEC Disqualify Labour Party and Approves Nine Parties for the Edo By-Elections,
The Labour Party has been disqualified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from running in Edo State’s National Assembly by-elections next week due to noncompliance with electoral regulations.
At a news conference in Benin City, Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, revealed this, claiming that the Labour Party had neither formally expressed its intention to run nor conducted a legitimate primary that was observed by the commission.
According to Ogulagha Vanguards News, this clarification follows the Labour Party’s earlier assertions that Paul Okojie had become their nominee for the Edo Central Senatorial seat, a claim that INEC has now refuted.

Nine Political Parties Are Allowed to Run for Office .
Nine political parties will run in the by-elections planned to replace the vacancies in the Ovia Federal Constituency and the Edo Central Senatorial District, according to the Electoral Commission.
The openings came after Senator Monday Okpebholo and Hon. Dennis Idahosa were declared the state’s nominees for governor and deputy governor, respectively.
Among the political parties that have been cleared are:
1. Action Alliance (AA)
2. African Democratic Congress (ADC)
3. All Progressives Congress (APC)
4. Allied Peoples Movement (APM)
5. Action Peoples Party (APP)
6. Action Democratic Party (ADP)
7. New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)
8. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
9.Zenith Labour Party (ZLP)
INEC Requests Media Assistance and Verifies Readiness
Onuoha reiterated that the commission is prepared to hold an election that is free, fair, and credible.
He pointed out that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has been properly configured and that non-sensitive materials have already been distributed to the impacted locations.
He stated that 101,617 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are still unclaimed out of the 719,504 registered voters in the seven local government districts involved.
Onuoha responded to the PDP’s demands for his dismissal by claiming they were baseless and asserting that the internal workings of the commission make electoral compromise all but impossible.
“Even if your relative is appointed to INEC, he cannot compromise the system,” he said. “The structure of the commission makes that impossible.”
Assuring that all parties would receive equal treatment during the election process, he also urged the media and political stakeholders to back INEC in fulfilling its duty to hold credible elections.
