FG, NLC Meeting To Prevent Indefinite Strike Ends In Deadlock.
The meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to prevent an impending strike action came to a conclusion on Monday without producing a firm answer to the union’s demands.
In an effort to stop organized labour from embarking on another industrial action, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, met with Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, and other officials in Abuja.
On the other hand, the minister is also scheduled to meet with the TUC leadership on Monday 18th September 2023.
The impasse occurred after Lalong invited the NLC to a meeting in light of the union’s proposed statewide strike against the removal of fuel subsidies and the hardships in the nation.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the National Labor Council (NLC) were earlier called to a meeting by the minister to discuss ways to prevent the September 5–6 walkout.
But the ministry stated that “only the TUC showed up for the meeting.”
At the meeting on Monday, Lalong pledged to work with organized labor to respond to the concerns of the labour unions in a fair and reasonable manner.
He appealed to the labor leaders to approach the discussions honestly and realistically.
The minister expressed hope that the gathering will result in an agreement of national interest.
NLC President Joe Ajaero responded by stating that his team was attending the meeting with mixed feelings in order to determine whether “something will happen or not,” as many previous meetings of this nature had failed to produce positive results.
Additionally, he pointed out that the strikes in the past the minister had mentioned were a result of the frustration Nigerian workers experienced as a result of the hardships imposed on by the removal of fuel subsidies.
He stated that after numerous meetings, not one of the agreements with the Federal Government was addressed.
Ajaero also angrily denounced the invasion of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) office, which resulted in some of its leaders being detained and arrested.
He asserts that the NLC will move forward with their planned strike based solely on that action.
