Calls for Reform of Land Ownership Systems in Northern States

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has express concerned over pressing issues affecting Northern Nigeria, which he said including insecurity, attacks on Northerners in Southern states, land ownership, and federal government policies.
The ACF Chairman, Alhaji Bashir M. Dalhatu, expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Northern Nigeria, citing senseless killings in various states.
The ACF Chairman also condemned attacks on Northerners living or working in Southern states, describing it as ironic and painful given the North’s history of hospitality. He emphasized the need for Northern states to reform land ownership systems to prevent foreigners and others from acquiring large tracts of land.
Alhaji Dalhatu criticized the federal government’s policies, suggesting they are discriminatory and exacerbate tensions between regions. He noted that the growing hostility and hate mongering against Northerners in the South appear to be exacerbated by these policies.
The ACF Chairman highlighted the need for the federal government to fulfill its obligations to the indigenous people of Abuja, including creating a state for them. He noted that the federal government has failed to adequately implement the provisions of the law creating the FCT Abuja.
The Chairman expressed concerns about the premature focus on the 2027 national elections, suggesting that Northern Nigeria is watching and auditing the actions of elected and appointed officials. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing regional interests and promoting policies that benefit Northern Nigeria.
Alhaji Dalhatu noted that Northern Nigeria has the potential to compete and prevail in any fair competition within the federation of Nigeria and even within the larger African continent. He emphasized the need for unity and collective action to address the region’s challenges.
