APC tells INEC to cancel the Kano by-election.

August 17, 2025

Due to what it described as widespread violence and disruption, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has requested that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) call off the rerun poll for the Ghari Constituency in Kano State as well as the by-election for the Shanono/Bagwai Constituency.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, signed a statement claiming that “extreme violence and disruption by armed thugs across several polling units” plagued the affected areas throughout the elections.

“Verifiable reports from Shanono and Bagwai Local Government Areas and Ghari constituency have voters fleeing polling areas, with deployed security personnel overwhelmed by the violence, making the prospects of a credible election impossible,” Morka told reporters.

He said that for the exercise to go forward would be tantamount to condoning electoral violence and jeopardizing the democratic process’s integrity.

“Proceeding with the Shanono/Bagwai Kano State Constituency bye-election and Ghari rerun election in the atmosphere of utter brigandage and outright violent voter intimidation will be against democratic dictates of free, fair and peaceful election, and set a dangerous precedent for undesirable and unacceptable electoral heist,” he added.

In order to preserve the nation’s democracy and “protect the sanctity of the ballot,” the party called on the electoral board to “immediately cancel” the bye-election and hold a new one.
