Amnesty International calls for Sowore’s release and denounces his incarceration.
“It is a blatant disrespect for the rule of law to try to bring Sowore before a court without his attorney’s assistance,” Amnesty International stated.
Human rights advocate and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore’s incarceration has been denounced by Amnesty International as a blatant abuse of authority, and the organization is calling for his immediate release.
In a statement released on Thursday, the rights organization made the call.
“Amnesty International just received a deeply disturbing report of the violent attempt by the police to forcibly drag activist Omoleye Sowore from his cell to ‘a court’ at 6:00am,” the statement said. “As a result, he sustained a severe injury on his left hand. Right now, he has been taken to an unknown location.”
The civil society organization demanded that Mr. Sowore receive proper medical attention right now and urged Nigerian authorities to summon the police to stop any additional physical damage.
“It is blatantly against the law to try to take Sowore to court without his attorney’s assistance. “Due process of law must be respected and upheld by the authorities,” Amnesty said.
Instead of stifling critics by abusing their position of authority, it urged Nigerian authorities to pay attention to their complaints.
“All false and politically motivated accusations against Sowore must be dropped, and he must be released unconditionally by Nigerian authorities.” Instead of attempting to silence critics via outright misuse of power, the authorities have to pay attention to what they have to say,” it continued.
Following his acceptance of the police’s offer to be questioned on claims of forgery and inciting disorder, Mr. Sowore was taken into custody on Wednesday.
IGP Kayode Egbetokun was accused by rights activist and attorney Deji Adeyanju of exploiting his position to settle personal scores and denounced Mr. Sowore’s arrest as illegal.
