Peter Obi is urged by the Lagos LP Chairperson to reconsider his political approach in light of his declining influence

Dayo Ekong, the chairperson of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, has warned that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, is losing support among voters and urged him to take stock of his political career.
In a message released on Tuesday using her official X Twitter, Ekong said that party structures, grassroots mobilization, and the public’s desire for change were all factors in Obi’s 2023 political ascent. She maintained that because of polarizing choices and erratic political relationships, the enthusiasm that once drove him is waning.
Nigerians supported him in 2023 because he offered a new alternative, Ekong said. “However, his actions today are starting to weaken the basis of that support.”
Obi’s recent endorsements, the Lagos LP chairwoman emphasized, are proof of his waning influence and that his support no longer ensures election victory.
As a prime example, she pointed to the 2024 Edo gubernatorial election, where Obi backed LP candidate Olumide Akpata, but the party lost to Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). APC candidate Hope Uzodimma defeated Obi’s favorite, Athan Achonu, in the 2023 Imo gubernatorial election, resulting in comparable defeats.
Obi’s choice to back African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Justina Azuka in the most recent Onitsha North 1 seat by-election, according to Ekong, was a grave strategic blunder. She said that because the ADC only received 1,909 votes, Obi’s overt support of an opposition candidate—including donning campaign materials bearing the ADC’s logo—did not yield any results. Despite the dismal performance of the Labour Party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won with 7,774 votes.
“A prudent politician should be able to pause and reflect carefully on his course,” Ekong suggested.
Before the general elections in 2027, she asked Obi to make amends with the LP leadership and give restoring party trust top priority.
“We publicly denounced Wike’s PDP/APC stunts, but we ignore Obi’s LP/ADC stunts,” she continued. “The electorate is observing and gradually forming opinions regarding 2027.”
