Atiku’s and Peter Obi’s 2027 presidential aspirations split ADC.
Tensions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are escalating in anticipation of the general elections in 2027 due to purported actions taken by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to solidify control of the party’s structures in preparation for a potential presidential bid. As a result, Peter Obi and other contenders are engaged in a political struggle for influence, according to POLITICS NIGERIA.
Atiku is charged with assuming control of ADC structures.
According to some ADC insiders, Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has deliberately seized control of the majority of ADC state chapters, zonal organizations, and even national leadership posts.
A party source informed our correspondent, “Atiku’s camp has already taken over more than 70% of the entire structure of the ADC, largely because they joined the party early and have more resources.”
According to the source, “there are ongoing efforts to implement leadership changes to favor Atiku in states where the chairmen have refused to cooperate.”
Atiku allegedly funded the majority of the ADC coup, according to another source. Atiku’s camp was in the lead from the coalition’s inception. To get some ADC members to resign, they made a sizable sum of money available. According to the source, “Atiku wouldn’t spend so much money and then fold his arms.”
“If Atiku is not contesting — but I believe he will — he will still determine whatever happens within the ADC coalition,” the insider continued. “Look at the Mark-led NWC, Obi only nominated the National Organising Secretary out of over 25 members.”
Obedient Movement’s Marginalization Complaints
The Obidient Movement’s leaked note to Obi expressed concerns about his followers’ absence from important decision-making processes, which further widened the split.
Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator, signed the document, which was dated July 29, 2025. It said:
“Our people are deliberately excluded at all levels. While we remain committed to building a united front for the task ahead, we must raise issues our members have repeatedly flagged… Several of our representatives are excluded from crucial meetings where major decisions affecting the coalition are made. This creates an impression of marginalisation and undermines trust.”
Yunusa insisted in an interview with Punch that Obi was not having difficulty staying relevant.
“Obi is not struggling for relevance. Carrying his loyalists along in the ADC is a work in progress. On whether Obi will join ADC or not, he has made it clear that he’s still a member of the Labour Party.”
ADC Leadership Rejects Claims of Atiku Takeover
Bolaji Abdullahi, the interim national publicity secretary for the ADC, denied the takeover claims and insisted that all applicants will be given equal opportunities.
“The party has not been seized by anyone and has no allegiance to anyone. Peter Obi was the party’s most powerful nominee for the National Organizing Secretary. All parties involved are included,” Abdullahi stated.
Ibrahim Mani, the chairman of the ADC Board of Trustees, also played off the rumored splits, emphasizing that the party was concentrated on assembling a formidable opposition to take on President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
ADC is ridiculed by APC as a “Coalition of Confusion.”
In response, the All Progressives Congress (APC) denied that the ADC could overthrow the current government. Bala Ibrahim, the APC’s director of publicity, stated:
“What we have been saying—that this alliance is a marriage of odd bedfellows—is validated by the divide among them. They lack coherence in their goals. Anger alone will not change the regime. “
