Nigeria: Labour Party Rules Out 2027 Coalition Plans.

The Labour Party, led by Julius Abure, has announced that it will not be joining any political coalition in the general elections of 2027.
This was said by Abure during a media briefing held in Abuja on Monday after the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
National Chairman Julius Abure and National Secretary Alh. Farouk Ibrahim signed the NEC decisions.
Members of the National Working Committee, national officers, and Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed, the LP 2023 vice presidential candidate, were present at the NEC meeting, he said.
“NEC thinks the coalition formed in 2023 had the biggest influence. After that election, we will rebuild, make amends, and build on our victories.
With policies and a philosophy that tackle Nigeria’s socioeconomic issues, the Labour Party has a unique ideology.
“We therefore cannot align with politically spent forces who previously mismanaged the nation’s resources and opportunities.”
He further stated that on Friday, July 18, a faction of the party convened a rival meeting at Transcorp, which NEC denounced.
“The meeting was not officially sanctioned and violated the Labour Party Constitution,” he said.
The illegal Umuahia Caretaker Committee was renamed an Interim National Working Committee, and NEC disassociates itself from the meeting’s conclusions.
“Illegality cannot be legitimised by rebranding. The so-called Interim NWC remains unlawful,” he said.
According to Article 14(4)(B) of the Constitution, meetings can only be called by the National Secretary with the Chairman’s consent, Abure clarified.
He maintained that the Labour Party does not have a leadership void.
He noted that the party convened its National Convention in Nnewi on March 27 while adhering to all party and legal guidelines.

Abure consequently requested Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, to uphold the Supreme Court’s decision and the relevant legal judgments.
NEC advises the public to ignore the alleged meeting and its resolutions in light of this.
“NEC reaffirms confidence in the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee and calls for continued loyalty to party leadership,” he said.
In accordance with the party constitution and relevant laws, Abure said, NEC also authorized congresses at the state, local, and ward levels.
Baba-Ahmed’s support for the leadership and his announcement that he will run for office in 2027 were praised by him. (NAN)
