National grid is down due to a labor union strike.
There is currently a widespread outage as a result of the striking labor union’s intentional shutdown of the national grid.
This was announced by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in an early Monday morning statement from Ndidi Mbah, the company’s public affairs manager, in Abuja.
According to her, the outage happened on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 2:19 in the morning.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria thus notifies the public that the Labour Union has shut down the national grid, resulting in a statewide blackout, according to the statement.
The national grid went offline this morning, June 3, 2024, at roughly 2:19 a.m.
The Benin Transmission Operator, part of the Independent System Operations unit of TCN, reported at 1:15 a.m. today that all operators had been driven out of the control room, and that any staff members who had resisted had been physically assaulted and some had even suffered injuries. As a result, the Benin Area Control Center had been reduced to zero with no supervision or control.
“The Ganmo, Benin, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba, and Osogbo Transmission Substations are among the other transmission substations that were closed by the Labour Union. As a result of the labor union’s continued efforts, several transmission cables were opened evenly
“In Terms of power generation, several generating stations were compelled to shut down portions of their plants; the Jebba Generating Station was forced to shut down one of its units, and three other units in the same substation were forced to shut down on an extremely frequent basis after that. At 2:19 a.m., the national grid was shut down due to high frequency and system instability caused by the abrupt forced load decreases.
“At about 3.23am, however, TCN commenced grid recovery, using the Shiroro Substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation. The situation is such that the labour Union is still obstructing grid recovery nationwide
“We will continue to make effort to recover and stabilize the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres nationwide.”
