National blackouts will begin in Nigeria as electrical workers indicate they will stop providing their services at midnight on Sunday in support of the organized labor’s indefinite strike that is scheduled to begin on Monday.
This was revealed in an update on Friday by Dominic Igwebike, the National Union of Electricity Workers’ acting general secretary.
This incident aligns with the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress’ indefinite strike action against the federal government for not signing and enforcing a new minimum wage and for reversing the 240 percent increase in electricity tariffs that was implemented on April 3.
“The withdrawal of services becomes effective Sunday 2nd June by midnight”, the notice stated.
According to OGULAGHA VANGUARDS, organized labor said that the indefinite strike would begin on Monday.
The minimum wage recommended by organized labor was N400,000, whereas the federal government had given N60,000.
Workers previously went on strike in protest of the government’s proposed N60,000 minimum wage.
The strike is also being used by Nigerian workers to emphasize their demand that the current N208.80 energy cost be immediately reversed to N65 kilowatt-hour.
