Community in Delta Destroyed Following Soldier Killing

Sixteen soldiers lost their lives in the Okuama community in Delta State’s Ughelli South Local Government Area. The area has been completely destroyed.
Strong claims have been made that the act may have been committed by some enraged soldiers following the deaths of their comrades.
Under the leadership of Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army’s 6th Division, soldiers have made some arrests while the manhunt for the murderers continues.

In the wee hours of Saturday morning, soldiers from the joint task force, overseen by Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, retrieved fourteen dead bodies of killed soldiers from Okuama community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
It was reported that the stomachs and hearts of some of the recovered corpses had been torn off, and that some had been beheaded.
The bodies of the two killed majors and the commanding officer were seen floating by the river bank at the NDDC jetty in the coastal Delta community, while the others were separated on land.
Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has directed an investigation into the untimely deaths of 12 soldiers and four senior officers.
Before they were killed on Thursday, March 14, it was reported that the deceased military personnel had responded to a distress call following the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities, both in Delta State.
In a statement released on Saturday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the acting director of defense information, confirmed the incident and stated that while 181 Amphibious Battalion soldiers were in the state’s Bomadi Local Government Area on a peace mission, some young community members had surrounded the victims.
“The unfortunate incident occurred when the troops responded to a distress call after the communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities both in Delta State,” the statement read.
“The reinforcement team led by the commanding officer was also attacked, leading to the deaths of the commanding officer, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers.”
Made Arrests
The incident has been reported to the Delta State Government, the defense spokesperson said, adding that the CDS has also ordered that the perpetrators’ identities be made public.
He claims that some suspects in relation to the incident have been taken into custody.
Additionally, he reaffirmed the military’s dedication to upholding peace and security throughout the nation.
“The Chief of Defence Staff ( CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has directed the immediate investigation and arrest of those involved in the heinous crime. The occurrence has been reported to the Delta State Government.
“However, the military remains focused and committed to its mandate of maintaining peace and security in the country. So far, a few arrests have been made while steps in place to unravel the motive behind the attack.”
