Fubara and Akpabio argue about politics during Wigwe’s funeral.
Was this the right place for them to do this?
Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Senate President Godswill Akpabio sparred over politics during the funeral of Herbert Wigwe, the late Access Bank CEO and legendary figure in the banking industry.
The burial was held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Isiokpo, Rivers State’s Ikwerre Local Government Area.
The governor of Rivers was invited to resign from office by the Senate President if he felt it was not worth it.
In reaction to Fubara’s remark about the political elite that attended Wigwe’s funeral, Akpabio made this statement.
What is this struggle all about? Fubara had asked earlier in his statement at the burial. What is the purpose of your desire to kill and bury? He’s not a politician; this is a man. Through our investments, he was able to make his money.
“Financially, he has the world at his fingertips. He even has power over the political elite. However, even with all of the financial power today, life was out of control.
“Is it not enough today to ask ourselves why are we struggling? Why are we not making impact in the life of our people? Please, political class, let’s go home with that question, and be answering it in our minds, and reflecting it in what we do.”
In response to the governor, Akpabio suggested that Fubara should leave the well-publicized political conflict if he thought it was pointless.
“We’re not going to cry in one day alone; we’ll cry for so many days,” stated the Senate President. You will cry when you see the university. You will weep when you walk through his house and building.
“Anywhere in the globe, including the Access Bank branches in Kenya and Dubai, will make you cry. You will cry when they talk about it and bring up his name because of the youngsters he touched, the ones he sent to school, and the lives they touched.
“Then you will ask yourself, just like Governor Fubara said, what is the struggle all about? Your excellency, Governor Fubara, if there is nothing in the struggle, don’t struggle.”
Akpabio, while eulogising Wigwe, said, “Herbert was an iconic person; he was a people’s person. I believe he was a friend and a brother to all that came across him.”
Remember that Herbert Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and son Chizi were all buried in a private ceremony in Omueke, Isiokpo, Rivers State, the couple’s homeland.
Funeral rites honoring the life of the banking CEO and his family have been held for a week prior to the funeral.
Politicians, corporate executives, and mourners from a variety of backgrounds, including friends, associates, and well-wishers from the local and global communities, attended the funeral service.
