NLC to decide on indefinite strike on Tuesday
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has set Tuesday, September 26, for its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to decide on a date for the start of the nationwide strike over the removal of fuel subsidy and related issues.
Following the expiration of the NLC’s 21-day deadline for the government to address the mass suffering and poverty brought on by the removal of fuel subsidies, there is now a possibility of industrial action.
The union sent out a circular inviting NEC members to the meeting on Tuesday by noon to decide on the day members will begin the indefinite nationwide strike, according to a top NLC official who requested anonymity.
The office said:
“Every worker in Nigeria would go on strike. The only thing to make it stop is compliance with the demands that NLC issued to the federal government.”
The official also voiced his dissatisfaction about the police’s invasion and occupation of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) headquarters.
He pointed out that although NURTW officers had been released, the police continued to reside in the union’s Abuja headquarters, “imposing their own cloned leadership” on them.
He claimed that the action was not only undemocratic but also against the status and convention of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and current Nigerian laws.
