The NDDC initiates a scheme to create jobs in oil-producing region.
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)’s managing director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, stated that the commission was working towards providing the youth in the region job opportunities.
Ogbuku said this while addressing the Chairman of the Nigerian Young Professionals Forum (NYPF) and Convener of Niger Delta Young Professionals, Moses Siasia and members of his team, during a meeting in his office in Port Harcourt.
He stated that the commission had been repositioned to bring about the much-needed growth and development in order to instill hope in the region.
“The NDDC is now largely focusing on sustainable partnerships in manpower and infrastructural development, with a short, medium and long term plan,” he said.
In accordance with its strategic plan to provide job opportunities for young people in the Niger Delta, Ogbuku stated that the commission had floated a project titled “Project Hope.”
In order to give young people sustainable means of surviving, he said, Project Hope would concentrate on agriculture and tech hubs for them.
“We have a new way of thinking and a new way of doing things. We are moving away from the past because times are changing and we need to catch up.
“Our deliberate and strategic plans are geared towards sustainable development. We are committed to ensure that we build the capacity of our youths in areas that they can have comparative advantage.
“We have set up what we call Project Hope.
“This initiative is focused on tech hubs and agriculture. It will take our youths out of poverty and help to create sustainable livelihood.
“They will be their own bosses and also employers of labor,” he said.
The NDDC director went on to say that the organization is building a database of young people in the area to aid it planning and workforce development.
According to him, the comprehensive database will allow the NDDC to implement its empowerment plan.
Regarding creative efforts to change its methods, Ogbuku stated that the commission had engaged KPMG to develop an Internal Corporate Governance System.
While lamenting the large number of abandoned projects in the area, he said that the commission was working in conjunction with Niger Delta state governments, individuals, and organizations to maximize its developmental goal.
He added that, “The partnership will accelerate the delivery of critical infrastructure in the region.”
Moses Siasia praised the NDDC boss earlier in his speech for the extensive reforms he had started, saying that they had improved the commission’s focus on results.
Siasia explained that they were visiting him in his office to get acquainted and to congratulate him on his appointment
He continued by saying that they have no doubts about Ogbuku’s ability to perform his duties.
He described the NDDC’s new thinking and vision as the result of purposeful leadership under Ogbuku and in order for him to be successful, he urged the people of the region to support him.
