82 Boko Haram Fighters Killed In Inter-Ethnic Clash In Borno.
In an inter-ethnic clash among the insurgents, at least 82 Boko Haram fighters have been killed. The incident took place in Kukawa Local Government Area in Borno State. The occurrences were reported to Ogulagha Vanguard Ltd on Wednesday by local and security sources resident in Baga and places along Lake Chad’s edges. Seven Boko Haram fighters from the Buduma tribe were reportedly killed, according to one of the sources, which sparked the conflict.
In response to their failure to surrender to the Nigerian military on tuesday, he said the killed fighters were executed by their leader in Bukkwaram Island. “Their colleagues, in whom they had placed their trust, betrayed against them and told their commander of their intention to give up. After being spotted, they were taken to Bukkwaram Island, where the commander gave them a firing squad execution.
So, after they were killed, an ethnic crisis broke out among the four fighting tribes—the Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri, and Buduma. According to the source, “some of the Buduma ethnic group’s fighters accused the commander of being overbearing, considering how they are losing fighters in the region recently.”
He claimed that after a meeting was called, all the commanders—regardless of their tribes—agreed that fighters might go anywhere they pleased after leaving the meeting area.
However, Baduma Bakura, a commander from the Buduma tribe who had traveled yesterday from the Ali Mandula base in the Niger Republic, resisted. He said to have come to investigate the murder of his brothers and to shoot anyone who tried to leave the area. However, Buduma was killed by the Fulani fighters who opened fire during an argument.
82 fighters were killed during the brutal firefights. Nobody could identify the members of ISWAP or Boko Haram among them. He said, that “it was purely an ethnic conflict.”
According to a local security source who spoke to our correspondent, most of the fighters who lost their lives were well-known Boko Haram rebels who escaped from Baga, Doron Baga, and Kukawa to the Niger Republic and other regions of the Sahel.
They escaped from the opposite side of Lake Chad in Niger and returned home, then ethnic clash broke out. He added, “It’s still not clear the number of commanders lost in the hostility but it was a great damage on their side, and some of the Buduma fighters that survived the war had even fled to Chad.”
